Google Business Profile for Law Firms: The Complete Optimization Guide

By RivalMappd  |  Local SEO for Law Firms

When someone searches "divorce attorney near me" or "DUI lawyer in [your city]," Google decides in milliseconds which three law firms to show in the map pack. Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single biggest factor in that decision — bigger than your website, bigger than your ads, bigger than your Avvo profile.

Most law firms treat their GBP like a business card: fill in the basics and forget it. The firms that actually dominate local search treat it like a living marketing asset that needs regular attention. Here's how to do that.

Start With the Absolute Basics (But Get Them Perfect)

Inconsistencies in your basic information confuse Google and hurt your rankings. Before doing anything else, make sure these are exactly right:

NAP Consistency Is Non-Negotiable

NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone. If your address is listed as "Suite 400" on your GBP but "Ste. 400" on your website and "400" on your Avvo profile, Google sees three different businesses. Audit all your listings and make them identical.

Choose the Right Primary Category

Your primary category is one of the most powerful ranking factors in your GBP. Google uses it to decide which searches your profile is relevant for.

Don't be vague. Instead of "Law Firm," choose the most specific category that matches your primary practice:

You can also add secondary categories for additional practice areas. If you handle both personal injury and criminal defense, list both — but keep your primary category as your main revenue driver.

Write a Business Description That Actually Works

Google gives you 750 characters for your business description. Most attorneys write something generic like "We are a full-service law firm committed to serving our community." That's a wasted opportunity.

Your description should answer three questions: Who do you help? What do you do for them? And why should they call you specifically?

A better version: "We help injury victims across [City] and [County] get the compensation they deserve after car accidents, slip-and-fall injuries, and workplace accidents. Our attorneys have recovered over $50 million for clients since 2008 and offer free consultations with no fees unless we win."

Use Local Keywords Naturally

Mention your city, county, or metro area in your description. Don't keyword-stuff — just write naturally about who you serve and where. "Serving families throughout [City] and surrounding [County] communities" is enough to help Google understand your geographic service area.

Add Services to Your Profile

The Services section lets you list each practice area individually. This is hugely valuable for law firms because it tells Google exactly what types of legal matters you handle — which helps your profile show up for more specific searches.

Add a separate service entry for each distinct practice area: personal injury, car accidents, truck accidents, slip and fall, workers' compensation, criminal defense, DUI, divorce, child custody, etc. Add a 1–3 sentence description to each one.

Upload Professional Photos — And Keep Adding Them

Profiles with photos receive significantly more clicks than profiles without them. For law firms, the right photos build trust before a potential client ever reads a word about you.

What to upload:

Aim for at least 10–15 photos to start, then add new ones every few months. Google favors active profiles.

Use Google Posts Every 1–2 Weeks

Google Posts are short updates — like social media posts — that appear directly on your GBP. Most law firms never use them, which is a missed opportunity because posting regularly signals to Google that your profile is active.

Good post topics for law firms:

Enable Messaging and Answer Questions Promptly

Google Business Profile allows potential clients to message you directly from your profile. Enable this feature if it's available in your market. Respond within a few hours — Google measures your response time and can display it publicly, and slow response times can cost you clients who move on to the next result.

Also monitor the Q&A section of your profile. Anyone can ask — and answer — questions there, including your competitors. Get ahead of common questions by adding them yourself with authoritative answers: "Do you offer free consultations? Yes, we offer a free 30-minute consultation for all new matters."

Your Competitors Are Watching Your Profile Too

The law firms outranking you in your market almost certainly have more optimized GBPs than you. They've filled in every section, they have more reviews, and they post regularly. The question isn't whether optimization matters — it's whether you'll act on it before they extend their lead further.

Track What's Actually Working

Google provides basic analytics inside your GBP dashboard — how many people searched for you, how many clicked for directions, how many called. Look at these numbers monthly. More importantly, track how your profile metrics compare to your top competitors'.

If a competing firm is getting far more reviews per month than you, or if they just updated their photos while yours are from 2019, that's an actionable gap. You can close it — but only if you know it exists.
